Agenda

Mission

We are faced with fundamental global challenges – climate emergency, growing inequality, and the need to design for rapid urbanization in a human centric and sustainable way – to which architecture has yet to develop consistent answers. Structural Design is playing a key part in this.

Shaping those answers will be an exciting journey. The design process is becoming more complex. It requires more transdisciplinary collaboration and at the same time strong design leadership. Questions of material, structure, shape, organization, cultural value, and formal expressions will need to be redefined. Structural Design has a major role to play here.

Using a combination of seminars, discourse, research, focused studies, and on-project design work, the Structural Design department is exploring and shaping the structural engineering aspects of this next chapter in the development of architecture.

Courses

Advanced Structural Design A

Exploring case studies (built examples), looking critically at how the structural/architectural integration could have been resolved in different ways and how potentially different approaches or material solutions could have led to different end results.

Wolf Mangelsdorf
SEW, 3 ECTS

Advanced Structural Design B

Exploring case studies (built examples), looking critically at how the structural/architectural integration could have been resolved in different ways and how potentially different approaches or material solutions could have led to different end results.

Wolf Mangelsdorf
SEW, 3 ECTS

Structural Design Integration

Integration of Structural design concepts into the architectural (studio) project. One to one tutorial based on appointment. Appointment managed through a google calendar run by Andrei Gheorghe.

2022W/2023S, scientific seminar, 3.0 ECTS

Structure, Material, Tectonics and Space

Following an introduction into the history of (new) materials and their effect on the development of structural engineering and architecture throughout history, students researched new materials and material strategies, the associated construction and building techniques that are emerging and their impact on structure and architecture.

Scientific seminar, 3.0 ECTS

Digital Design and Full Scale Fabrication

This class teaches the application of contemporary digital design and fabrication methods in applied, full-scale implementations. Student groups will generate knowhow through the analysis of reference examples, and will design parametric structures in full-scale by using easily processable materials. The design process will be enriched with virtual analysing methods of parametric models.

Scientific seminar, 3.0 ECTS

Angewandte Mechanik - Industrial Design

Applied mechanics for Industrial Design deals with basic physical nature in order to apply these modes of operation onto/within student projects.

Vorlesung und Übungen, 2.0 ECTS

Tragkonstruktionen - Industrial Design
